SALISBURY, MD - On August 25, 2025, a bat located near Foxchase Drive in Salisbury, Maryland, tested positive for rabies. The Wicomico County Health Department is advising residents to remain aware of their surroundings and to avoid contact with any wild or stray animals.
Rabies is a preventable viral disease found in the saliva of mammals. It can be transmitted between animals or from animals to humans through bites or scratches. The virus can also be spread if infected saliva comes into contact with open wounds or with the eyes, nose, or mouth. If left untreated, rabies is fatal in both humans and animals.
To protect families and pets, the Health Department offers the following safety recommendations:
- Keep pets confined to your property.
- Avoid all contact with wild or stray animals.
- Teach children not to approach or touch unfamiliar animals.
- Vaccinate pets against rabies. Maryland law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets over four months of age to have a current rabies vaccination.
- Avoid leaving pet food or water outside.
- Ensure outdoor garbage can lids are securely fastened.
To report any human or animal contact, such as a bite or scratch from a wild or stray animal, please call the Wicomico County Health Department at (410) 546-4446.
