Cambridge, MD - Officers from the Cambridge Police Department responded to the 2300 block of Hudson Road on January 27, 2026. The response occurred at approximately 7:55 p.m. following a report of an assault involving a firearm. Upon arrival at the scene, officers made contact with the victim to establish the details of the incident.

The victim alleged that Jamel Levine Newman, a 36-year-old resident of Cambridge, assaulted them. The report indicates that Newman grabbed the victim by the neck and forced them to the ground.

The victim stated that Newman held them on the ground while pointing a handgun at them. Officers subsequently located Newman at a different apartment within the same complex, where he was taken into custody without incident.

During the investigation, officers recovered a loaded 9mm SAR handgun containing 12 rounds of ammunition. A shotgun and additional ammunition were also located in a bedroom.

Authorities noted that neither firearm was secured with a safety lock or stored in a safe. The investigation determined the weapons were accessible to a 9-year-old child residing in the home. All firearms and ammunition were seized by police.

Newman was transported to the Cambridge Police Department for processing. He was later transferred to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections and held on a no-bond status. Newman has been charged with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Assault Weapon Magazine Use, and Firearm Access by Minors.
