Cambridge Police Respond to Theft in Progress at Walmart

Cambridge, Maryland - On July 29, 2025, at approximately 12:45 p.m., detectives from the Cambridge Police Department responded to a Walmart location following reports of a theft in progress. Upon their arrival, officers met with Walmart Asset Protection Officers (APO) outside the store, who were attempting to detain an individual involved in the incident.


Police detained the individual, later identified as Charles William Smith, a 61-year-old resident of Stevensville, Maryland. According to APO, Smith entered the store, filled a shopping cart with merchandise, and exited the premises without paying, bypassing all points of sale.


When approached by APO and requested to accompany them to the store's Asset Protection Office, Smith refused and attempted to leave the area.


The total value of the stolen merchandise amounted to $508.07. Following the incident, Smith was issued a criminal citation on-site and subsequently released. He has been charged with Theft of $100 to under $1,500 under Maryland law.
