CHARLES ECKER SENTENCED TO FIFTEEN YEARS FOR FIRST-DEGREE ASSAULT

Wicomico County, MD - On May 4, 2023, the Honorable Kathleen L. Beckstead, Chief Judge of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County, sentenced Charles Ecker, formerly of Delmar, Maryland, to fifteen years in the Division of Corrections.Ecker was convicted on February 28, 2023, following a two (2) day jury trial, of one count of First-Degree Assault, one count of Second-Degree Assault, and one count of Reckless Endangerment.On July 28, 2022, Ecker and the female victim became involved in a verbal altercation while driving in the victim's vehicle. When the two arrived at Ecker's residence in Delmar, the argument escalated and Ecker assaulted the victim. The victim ran from the vehicle into Ecker's residence to seek assistance from Ecker's mother.Moments later, the victim exited the residence to prevent Ecker from stealing her belongings, whereupon she was repeatedly struck by Ecker, causing her to lose consciousness. When the victim regained consciousness, Ecker was on top of her with his hands around her neck.The victim escaped from Ecker and fled in her vehicle when Ecker's mother called him into the residence. The victim was treated for her injuries at Atlantic General Hospital.Wicomico County State's Attorney (SA) Jamie Dykes said "Charles Ecker is a habitual offender with numerous prior assault convictions. The prosecutors of the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office will vigorously prosecute repeat offenders and seek significant sentences upon conviction."SA Dykes commended Cpl. Smithhart of the Delmar Police Department for his work in the investigation.
