Kent County, MD - In today's fast-paced world, traffic violations are commonplace, and law enforcement officers are dedicated to ensuring the safety of our roads and communities. A recent incident on Rt 301 in Galena, MD, highlighted the rigorous measures officers take to uphold traffic laws and address more serious offenses, as a result of those traffic stops.

On May 14, 2025, Sgt. G. Manning, a Deputy from the Kent County Sheriff's Office, conducted a routine traffic stop for a significant speeding violation. The driver, Vontaye Lamonte Gilbert, was observed traveling at a speed well above the limit, 102 MPH in a posted 55 MPH zone. This blatant disregard for speed limits not only put the driver at risk but also endangered others on the road.

Sgt. Manning stopped the vehicle and the proceeded with a roadside interview. That interview led to Sgt. Manning enlisting the help of K9 Officer Cpl. J. Walker and his trusted K9 companion, Oxan, to conduct a exterior vehicle sniff. K9 Oxan gave an alert and indicated a positive alert, suggesting the odor of an illegal substances.

This alert provided probably cause to search the vehicle, leading to the discovery of controlled dangerous substances (CDS) and associated paraphernalia.

The driver, Vontaye Lamonte Gilbert, aged 45, was released after being issued criminal and traffic citations.
