CITY OF SALISBURY TO RESTORE TWO-WAY TRAFFIC ON CARROLL STREET

Salisbury, MD - The City of Salisbury has announced plans to restore full two-way traffic on Carroll Street, from Circle Avenue to U.S. Route 13, after re-evaluating the 2022 street redesign. This decision follows over two years of monitoring the impact of the changes, which included expanded bike lanes.
Mayor Randy Taylor explained that the decision was based on extensive analysis and real-world observations. "More than two years of practical experience and observation have shown that the extra-wide bike paths installed in 2022 are underutilized, confuse drivers, and impede traffic flow," he stated.
While bike lanes will remain, they will be resized to improve overall traffic management. "The bike paths will still exist, but they won't dominate the design as they did previously. This adjustment will allow for better traffic flow while ensuring safety and accessibility for both cyclists and pedestrians," the Mayor added.
The revised street design will feature two lanes in each direction for vehicles, complete with directional arrows for clarity. Bike lanes will be maintained, one for eastbound cyclists and one for westbound cyclists, with proper separation from vehicle lanes to enhance safety. Additionally, pedestrian crossings will be improved with highly visible markings to increase safety for those on foot.
"Carroll Street is a major thoroughfare in the City," Mayor Taylor emphasized. "These common-sense updates reflect real-world usage, helping travelers move safely through our downtown."
Residents can expect minor disruptions in Spring 2025 when construction work is set to begin. The City will provide regular updates on the project's progress to minimize inconvenience, including any necessary temporary traffic adjustments during the transition period.
Mayor Taylor reassured the public of the City's commitment to carefully executing the project. "I want everyone to know that our staff is taking great care to properly implement the Carroll Street project, as it is an important street in Salisbury," he said.
