Berlin, MD - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has announced that construction work will begin at the US 50 (Ocean Gateway) and MD 589 (Racetrack Road) intersection in Worcester County on Saturday, November 1. The project is scheduled for completion by spring 2026, pending favorable weather conditions.

The intersection improvements are required to support the development of Coastal Square, a new commercial shopping center and apartment complex located on the south side of US 50. The construction will add a fourth leg to the intersection, creating a four-way configuration.

The traffic signal on Brader Lane will be removed as part of these changes. Additional work includes widening and resurfacing the east and westbound lanes of US 50. Crews will also install new pavement markings and upgrade stormwater systems to accommodate the commercial development.

Motorists should expect 24-hour, single-lane closures and flagging operations throughout the duration of the project. Reynolds Excavating of Princess Anne, the developer's contractor, will use arrow boards, cones, and flaggers to guide traffic safely through the work zone.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area and to follow all posted signs and instructions from flaggers.
