Delaware Man Arrested for 4th Offense DUI After Driving Wrong Way on Road

Sussex County, DE - Delaware State Police arrested Nathaniel Spencer, 54, of Lewes on multiple charges following a traffic stop on Saturday evening. Spencer faces his fourth DUI offense and several traffic violations.


Traffic Stop Details


The incident occurred on August 23, 2025, at approximately 10 p.m. A state trooper observed Spencer's white Acura traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Robinsonville Road near Kendale Road.


The vehicle then moved back into the correct lane.

The trooper activated emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. Spencer exited his vehicle as the trooper initiated the stop. The officer instructed Spencer to return to his car and observed signs of impairment.


Evidence of Impairment


Upon contact, the trooper detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages from Spencer. Additional signs of impairment were noted during the encounter. The officer also observed that the Acura had a shredded front tire and was riding on the rim.


The trooper administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which revealed further evidence of impairment. Spencer was subsequently taken into custody.


Additional Violations Discovered


A computer inquiry revealed Spencer was under pre-trial conditions that prohibited him from driving or controlling a vehicle. The investigation also uncovered multiple vehicle violations.


The Acura was uninsured and had expired registration. Spencer's driver's license had been revoked.


Charges and Bond


Spencer was transported to Troop 7 and processed on the following charges:


  • 4th Offense DUI (Felony)
  • Breach of Conditions of Bond (Felony)
  • Driving in Proper Lane and Direction
  • Driving While Suspended or Revoked
  • Failure to Have Required Insurance
  • Other Traffic Violations


Justice of the Peace Court 3 arraigned Spencer. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $8,400 cash bond.
