DELAWARE STATE POLICE ARREST MAN FOR 5TH DUI FOLLOWING POLICE PURSUIT

Millsboro, DE - A high-speed pursuit late Tuesday evening resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old man, identified as Lee Books, by the Delaware State Police. 

Books is now being held on a number of serious charges, including a 5th offense for driving under the influence (DUI), a felony in Delaware. 

The incident started on John J. Williams Highway, in the area of Banks Road in Millsboro, DE, when a DSP Trooper noticed a black Ford Explorer swerving haphazardly. Despite attempted intervention for a traffic offense, the driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. 

The chase went from Millsboro to Bridgeville and encapsulated a series of traffic violations, including running a red light and a stop sign. State Police utilized tire deflation devices in an attempt to halt the fugitive vehicle, which eventually pulled over on South Main Street in Bridgeville, Delaware. 

Inside the vehicle were the driver, Lee Books, and an unidentified female passenger. Both were detained without any further issues. 

A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in finding a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun with a 15-inch barrel, brass knuckles, a 6-inch fixed blade knife, and a wallet containing drug paraphernalia alongside approximately 56.57 grams of the illicit substance known as GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate).

The female passenger was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and released.  Books was placed under arrest and is now facing a slew of charges that punctuate a significant crime spree in Sussex County.

Books was transported to Troop 7, where he was charged with the following offenses:


  • 5th Offense DUI (Felony)

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)

  • Possession of a Destructive Weapon - Sawed Off Shotgun (Felony)

  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony) - 3 counts

  • Disregard a Police Officer Signal (Felony)

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance

  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia - 8 counts

  • Leaving the Scene of a Property Collision

  • Driving While Suspended or Revoked

  • Numerous Traffic Violations


Books was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $36,415 cash bond.
