DELAWARE STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE EARLY TUESDAY MORNING FATAL CRASH

Lewes, DE - A fatal bicycle crash early this morning has claimed the life of a woman in Lewes, Delaware, according to Delaware State Police. The collision involving a bicyclist and a 2020 Isuzu 6-wheel box truck occurred on John J. Williams Highway, just west of Mulberry Knoll Road, at approximately 1:57 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

The specifics of the incident are under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate that the bicyclist, operated by a 58-year-old local woman, entered the eastbound lane of the highway and was subsequently struck by the box truck in the same lane. The identity of the woman is being withheld pending notification of her family.

The driver of the box truck, a 60-year-old man from Salisbury, Maryland, was reportedly properly restrained and escaped the collision without injury. The crash led to the roadway's closure for about two and a half hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
