Delaware State Police Investigating Fire Police Officer Struck by Vehicle

Georgetown, DE - Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a fire police officer in Georgetown, Delaware. The incident occurred on the evening of November 3, 2025, while emergency crews were managing an earlier crash scene. 

At approximately 8:36 p.m., a Georgetown Fire Company fire police officer was directing traffic at the intersection of Lewes-Georgetown Highway and Shingle Point Road. The officer was standing in the eastbound lane near his vehicle, which had emergency blue lights activated. He was wearing a high visibility reflective vest and hat while using a red strobe wand to control traffic.

A Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway at the same time. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle continued eastbound and struck the fire police officer.

The fire police officer, a 78-year-old man from Georgetown, Delaware, sustained critical injuries. He was transported by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old man from Georgetown, Delaware, was not injured in the crash.

Lewes-Georgetown Highway remained closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene. The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation.
