Dover Man Arrested on Felony Charges Following Domestic Disturbance

Rehoboth Beach, DE - On March 15, 2026, at approximately 1:13 a.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Second Street in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, following a report of a domestic disturbance in progress.

Upon arrival, officers located the suspect, Sonny Watkins, 39, of Dover, DE, leaving the area in his vehicle. Watkins was stopped and as a result of the initial investigation, was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

Following further investigation, officers determined that Watkins had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend. The altercation resulted in Watkins striking her multiple times, causing injury.

He also prevented her from leaving the premises and took her cell phone while she was speaking with the 911 dispatchers.

Watkins was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with the following offenses:

  • Reckless Endangering in the First Degree (Felony)
  • Unlawful Imprisonment in the First Degree (Felony)
  • Assault in the Third Degree (Misdemeanor)
  • Malicious Interference with Emergency Communications (Misdemeanor)
  • Driving Under the Influence (Misdemeanor)
  • Failure to Have License in Possession (Traffic Misdemeanor)

Watkins also had an outstanding capias for failing to appear at Family Court. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of a $46,501 secured bond.
