Easton Man Arrested for Assaulting Law Enforcement Officers

Talbot County, MD - On February 20, 2026, deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff's Office, Patrol Division, responded to Village Street in Easton, Maryland, to serve a court-ordered evaluation for Daniel H. Vrugtman, 47, of Easton, Maryland.

Upon contacting Vrugtman, deputies attempted to explain the court order and the evaluation process. During this interaction, Vrugtman became combative, assaulted the deputies, and tried to flee on foot.

Deputies were able to detain Vrugtman, but he continued to resist arrest and assaulted the uniformed officers. Additional assistance was provided by officers from the Easton Police Department, troopers from the Maryland State Police Easton Barrack, and other deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff's Office. Despite their efforts, Vrugtman continued to resist and attacked responding law enforcement personnel.

As a result of the altercation, two deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff's Office sustained minor injuries. Both were treated and released shortly after. Vrugtman also suffered minor injuries and was transported to Shore Regional Health in Easton for further treatment and to facilitate the court-ordered evaluation.

Vrugtman has been criminally charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, failure to obey a lawful order, and obstructing and hindering a police officer. Following a hearing before a District Court Commissioner, he was held without bond.
