Fatal Crash Claims Life of 30-Year-Old Man in Caroline County

Caroline County, MD - The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating a fatal crash that occurred yesterday afternoon in Caroline County, Maryland. The incident claimed the life of Joseph Dsouza, 30, of Ridgely, Maryland.

Dsouza was driving a 2017 Kia Sorento when the crash occurred. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical service personnel.

A passenger traveling with Dsouza has been identified as Hillary Coelho, 50, of Kuwait. Coelho was airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a local trauma center. Coelho remains hospitalized and continues to receive medical treatment.

The driver of the other vehicle involved, an Isuzu box truck, has been identified as James Sherry, 50, of Greensboro, Maryland. Sherry was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The crash took place shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Maryland Route 480, north of Eveland Road in Caroline County. Troopers from the Easton Barrack responded to the scene. Upon arrival, both the Isuzu box truck and the Kia Sorento were located off the roadway.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Isuzu was traveling north on Route 480 when it crossed the center line into the southbound lane. Crash team investigators believe the Kia attempted to avoid a head-on collision by moving onto the southbound shoulder. The crash occurred on the shoulder.

Emergency medical service personnel from Caroline County assisted state troopers at the scene.

Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration also responded to assist with road closures and detours while the investigation took place. The Office of the State's Attorney in Caroline County was notified of the incident.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing factor. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted a post-crash inspection on the truck. The Maryland State Police Crash Team leads the ongoing investigation.
