Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in Angola Under Investigation

Sussex County, DE - Delaware State Police are investigating a deadly collision that occurred yesterday afternoon near Angola. The crash resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.


The accident took place on August 19, 2025, at approximately 1:55 p.m. at the intersection of Harts Road and John J. Williams Highway in Lewes, Delaware.


A Honda CRV was traveling southbound on Harts Road and had stopped at the stop sign at John J. Williams Highway. Meanwhile, a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on John J. Williams Highway, approaching the intersection.


Police report that the Honda failed to remain stopped and proceeded to turn left onto John J. Williams Highway. The vehicle entered the path of the oncoming Freightliner. The front of the tractor-trailer struck the driver's side of the Honda.


The crash resulted in the tragic death of one individual and several people were injured:


  • A 68-year-old woman from Lewes, Delaware, who was seated in the left rear of the Honda, was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification.
  • The Honda's driver, a 78-year-old man from Lewes, Delaware, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.
  • A front seat passenger, a 36-year-old woman from Lewes, Delaware, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • The right rear seat passenger, a 37-year-old woman from Jersey City, New Jersey, suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized.
  • The Freightliner driver, a 64-year-old man from Bowie, Maryland, declined medical transport.


John J. Williams Highway remained closed for an extended period while investigators processed the scene and cleared the roadway.
