Federal Indictment Announced Against New York State Attorney General
State of VA - An indictment charging New York State Attorney General Letitia James was announced today by Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
A federal grand jury returned charges of Bank Fraud and False Statements to a Financial Institution. These charges are violations of 18 U.S.C. Section 1344 and 18 U.S.C. Section 1014.
"No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public's trust," said U.S. Attorney Halligan. "The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served."
If convicted, James faces penalties of up to 30 years in prison per count. A fine of up to $1 million on each count and forfeiture are also possible.
However, actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. Any sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge. This decision will follow the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
