Fire Investigation Underway at Single-Family Home in Chestertown
Kent County, MD - A single-family home in Chestertown, Maryland, sustained significant damage following a fire on the afternoon of January 20, 2026. The blaze broke out around 2:35 PM at a residence on Poplar Street.
Thirty firefighters from the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene. Crews worked for approximately one hour to bring the one-alarm fire under control. The fire reportedly started on the rear exterior deck of the one-story, wood-framed structure before spreading to the interior.
An occupant discovered the fire while inside the home. Both the occupant and her mother escaped safely, and no injuries were reported.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal estimates total damages at $200,000. This figure includes $160,000 in structural damage and $40,000 in lost contents. Investigators found that while smoke alarms were present, they did not activate. The home was not equipped with a fire alarm or sprinkler system.
