FORMER WICOMICO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY STEVEN ABREU SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON PLUS 30 YEARS

Wicomico County, MD - Former Wicomico County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Abreu has been sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 30 years after being convicted on multiple counts of rape and misconduct while in office.
The Honorable S. James Sarbanes delivered the sentence at the Circuit Court for Wicomico County on May 29, 2025. Abreu, 33 years old and formerly with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, was found guilty by a jury following a five-day trial in December 2024.
The offenses committed by Abreu were first reported in October 2022 when a victim claimed she had been detained and assaulted by him while he was on duty.
Further investigations revealed more serious incidents, including Abreu offering rides in his patrol vehicle to assault victims and misusing official visits for personal misconduct.
State's Attorney Jamie Dykes emphasized the severity of Abreu's actions, stating, "Steven Abreu used his position as a law enforcement officer to isolate and sexually assault women while on duty. He betrayed his oath and his responsibility to the people of this community and to all those who serve by wearing the badge."
The thorough investigation led by Corporal Christine Kirkpatrick, along with the prosecutorial efforts of Senior Assistant State's Attorneys Patrick Gilbert and Lauren Bourdon, received recognition from Dykes. Mrs Dykes also expressed her gratitude and acknowledged the bravery of the victims who came forward to ensure that justice was served.
