Queen Anne's County, MD - On December 21, deputies from the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding a disturbance at the Hyatt Place. The incident occurred at approximately 1:33 a.m. involving a guest who refused to leave the premises.

Upon arrival, DFC Leshinskie spoke with a hotel employee regarding the situation.

The employee identified the guest as Mary Jo Bowser. Staff reported that Bowser had been smoking in her room, which triggered the fire alarm. She reportedly refused to stop smoking or vacate the room when instructed by management.

Deputies approached the room and noted a strong smell of cigarette smoke. They also heard smoke detectors sounding in both the hallway and inside the room.

DFC Leshinskie knocked on the door and identified himself as law enforcement. Bowser responded by yelling through the closed door.

The noise caused a disturbance that prompted several other guests to check the hallway. Officers ordered Bowser to exit the room and informed her that she was trespassing. She refused to open the door.

Management provided a key to the deputies, but the door's top latch prevented it from opening fully. Officers attempted to disengage the latch with a tool.

During the process, Bowser pulled the tool from Deputy Rivera's hands. Deputies informed her she was under arrest for trespassing, but she continued to refuse entry.

A second tool was utilized to successfully open the latch. Deputies entered the room and placed Bowser under arrest.

She has been charged with Trespassing on Private Property, Disorderly Conduct, Failure to Obey a Reasonable and Lawful Order, Disturbing the Peace, Obstructing and Hindering a Police Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

Initially, Bowser was taken before the District Court of Maryland Commissioner, where she was offered a $10,000 bail. The following day, she was provided a bail review, at which time Judge Stephen J. Baker made the determination to hold her without bond.
