Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in Wicomico County
Wicomico County, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture announced a presumptive positive case of H5 Avian Influenza at a commercial broiler farm in Wicomico County, Maryland on February 14, 2026.
This is the first case of highly pathogenic H5 Avian Influenza (HPAI) on a commercial poultry farm in Wicomico County this year and the second case in Maryland in 2026.
State officials have quarantined the affected property, and depopulation measures are underway to contain the virus. Officials confirmed that birds from the affected flock will not enter the food supply.
While confirmation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratory is pending, state agencies are emphasizing safety.
The Maryland Department of Health indicates that the risk of transmission to the general public remains low.
However, individuals working directly with poultry or dairy farms are advised to follow strict biosecurity protocols.
Avian Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory virus that affects poultry such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys, as well as various wild bird species. It spreads easily through secretions and manure, and can be transmitted by wild birds, equipment, and the clothing of caretakers.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture urges all growers and backyard flock owners to implement enhanced biosecurity practices, such as restricting visitors, cleaning equipment, and removing loose feed that might attract wild birds.
Suspected cases of illness in commercial or backyard flocks should be reported immediately to the Maryland Department of Agriculture at 410-841-5810.
Sick wild birds can be reported to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Services hotline at (877) 463-6497.
