Assateague Island National Seashore - On Saturday, at approximately 9 PM, a horse was struck and killed by a vehicle on Bayberry Drive in Assateague Island National Seashore, located within the developed zone of the refuge.
The incident involved a 16-year-old bay mare, identified as T3DHT-H, commonly known as Gizmo. Gizmo typically resided in the Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) area but was known to frequent the developed zones during the summer months to avoid insects in the marshy habitats of the OSV region.
Local authorities have reminded visitors that the maximum speed limit throughout the island is 25 miles per hour, with several areas marked for lower speeds.
Drivers are urged to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly at night and during conditions of reduced visibility, such as fog. "Wildlife, including horses, remains difficult to spot at night, and it is important for vehicles to proceed cautiously," officials stated.
Visitors are also reminded to remain alert for pedestrians, cyclists, horses, deer, and other wildlife to ensure safety for all on the island.
