Investigation Underway After Inmate Death at Jessup Correctional Institute

State of MD - Maryland State Police are actively investigating the death of an inmate at the Jessup Correctional Institute. The deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Joseph Harrell. Harrell was serving time at the state prison facility located in Jessup, Maryland.

Investigators believe the incident occurred on the evening of January 26. At approximately 7:30 p.m., the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit received a report from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services regarding an inmate death. 

Preliminary findings indicate that Harrell was involved in an altercation with another inmate near the prison's library. Medical personnel responded to the location shortly after the incident, where they declared Harrell deceased.

A suspect has been identified in connection with the death. The suspect is also an inmate at the correctional facility. Authorities stated that the individual's identity will not be released until formal charges are placed.

Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded to process the scene for evidence. 

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office for review. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
