James Thompson Sentenced to Life in Prison with all but 25 Years Suspended

Wicomico County, MD - On July 25, 2025, the Circuit Court for Wicomico County sentenced 65-year-old James Thompson to life imprisonment with all but 25 years suspended. The sentencing was handed down by the Honorable S. James Sarbanes following Thompson's guilty plea on March 19, 2025, to Rape in the First Degree. Sentencing had been deferred pending the completion of a pre-sentence investigation.
Thompson's crimes, occurring between 2021 and 2023, involved repeated acts of sexual violence against a victim who was a member of the same household.
Evidence presented during the investigation revealed Thompson had employed both explicit and implicit threats to coerce compliance. On several occasions, Thompson forced the victim to perform sexual acts with other men, some of which he recorded.
The investigation, conducted by the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, included a forensic extraction of Thompson's cellular device, uncovering significant corroborating evidence, including video recordings.
During his interview with detectives, Thompson admitted to having a sexual interest in children. He also has a prior conviction from 2012 for a Sexual Offense in the Fourth Degree, involving the sexual abuse of a six-year-old child.
If released after serving 25 years, Thompson will face Lifetime Sexual Offender Supervision and will be required to register as a Tier III Sexual Offender, the highest designation under Maryland law.
Wicomico County State's Attorney (SA) Jamie L. Dykes said, "Sexual violence is a scourge that will never be tolerated in this County. It is difficult for survivors to report these crimes because of their reluctance to describe the intimate and violative nature of the acts and, frequently, because of their fear of being disbelieved. This survivor exhibited tremendous courage and perseverance throughout all stages of this case. Due to the diligent efforts of the Sheriff's Office, and the just sentence imposed by the Court, this Defendant will not be free to harm another person again."
State's Attorney Dykes commended the efforts of the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office personnel, including lead investigator Detective N. Chaffey and Sgt. J. Seichepine, along with members of the Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center, for their comprehensive work on the investigation.
Furthermore, Senior Assistant State's Attorney Michael Calabrese was acknowledged for his role in prosecuting the case and advocating for justice.
