Lewes Man Pleads Guilty to Fentanyl Distribution
Sussex County, DE - A 38-year-old Lewes resident, who was identified as Brandon Barnes, pleaded guilty to possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute. U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Hall accepted Brandon Barnes' plea.
The charges stemmed from a July 2024 traffic stop. Initially, Barnes fled from Lewes Police in his vehicle. After losing control and striking a utility box, he attempted to escape on foot but was soon apprehended by law enforcement.
Following the arrest, police discovered numerous blue pills marked "M30" scattered on the floor and the driver's seat of the vehicle. Further search revealed additional pills on the ground between the vehicle and the arrest site.
In total, law enforcement recovered more than 500 pressed fentanyl pills.
Barnes faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. After reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors, a federal district court judge will determine his final sentence at the scheduled sentencing hearing on July 15, 2026.
U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace announced the case. The Drug Enforcement Administration led the investigation, assisted by the Lewes Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle Thurstlic-O'Neill and Samuel S. Frey are prosecuting.
