Man Arrested After Vehicle Pursuit Spanning Two States
Sudlersville, MD - A Dover man was arrested early Wednesday morning following a vehicle pursuit that began in Delaware and ended in Queen Anne's County.
On November 8, at approximately 4:16 a.m., deputies were notified by the Dover Police Department of a vehicle pursuit involving a stolen transit van entering Queen Anne's County.
The vehicle had reportedly been stolen from a tow yard after damaging a closed gate. Dover Police discontinued their pursuit as the vehicle crossed into Maryland, noting that two of its tires were flat from previously deployed tire deflation devices.
At around 4:26 a.m., a Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Deputy observed the van traveling west on Sudlersville Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Jahmir Jennings of Dover, did not stop and proceeded through the town of Sudlersville at high speed, running a red light at the intersection of Route 300 and Route 313.
For public safety, the deputy was instructed to cease using lights and sirens and to follow the vehicle at a distance to monitor its location. The van entered Route 301 northbound before exiting onto Route 290 and then re-entering Route 301 southbound.
The driver briefly stopped on Route 301 near Hall Road but drove away as deputies attempted a high-risk traffic stop. The vehicle became progressively disabled, with sparks emitting from the front passenger side, where the tire, rotor, and wheel hub were later found to be missing. Its speed dropped to as low as 10 mph.
The van came to a final stop on Route 301, south of Route 304. Deputies, with assistance from the Maryland State Police, conducted a successful high-risk traffic stop and took Jennings into custody without further incident.
Jennings faces multiple charges, including Theft ($25,000 to under $100,000), Reckless Endangerment, and Attempt by Driver to Elude Police.
