MARK EBERT FOUND GUILTY AND SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR CAUSING LIFE THREATENING INJURY
Whaleyville, MD - On April 5, 2024, Michael Edward Ebert, a 53-year-old Sykesville, Maryland resident, was sentenced to three years in the Division of Corrections after being found guilty of causing a life-threatening injury while operating his motorcycle under the influence of alcohol.
The Honorable Brian D. Shockley of the Worcester County Circuit Court delivered the verdict, which suspended all but one year of Ebert's incarceration. Ebert will be under five years of supervised probation upon release, reflecting the gravity of the offense committed.
The case involved a horrific motorcycle accident in Whaleyville, Maryland, on September 14, 2022. Upon arriving at the scene, Maryland State Police discovered two individuals suffering from severe head trauma and bodily injury. The owner and operator of the motorcycle was identified as Ebert, and the other injured party was revealed to be Ebert's female passenger.
First responders from Berlin EMS reported a distinct odor of alcohol emanating from Ebert before both were airlifted to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, for medical treatment. A subsequent drug and alcohol screening at the hospital revealed Ebert's blood alcohol content exceeding .12, well above the legal limit.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team's meticulous investigation revealed that Ebert's motorcycle veered off the road and into the center median. The impact caused the motorcycle's footrest to strike the ground, causing the bike to slide for approximately 50 feet and ejecting both riders.
The female passenger sustained critical injuries, including a fractured shoulder, broken rib, punctured lung, partial paralysis, and loss of hearing in one ear, necessitating extended hospital care and intensive aftercare services for a prolonged period.
Worcester County State's Attorney Kris Heiser commended the Maryland State Police and their Crash Team for an exhaustive investigation and detailed examination of the accident scene. Assistant State's Attorney Pamela Correa was also acknowledged for prosecuting the case.
