Wicomico County, MD - The Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW) approved multiple funding awards for Wicomico County during its meeting on January 7, 2026. These state grants are designated for environmental upgrades, recreational facility improvements, and land preservation efforts.

The county received $100,000 through the Maryland Department of the Environment's Bay Restoration Fund. This funding supports Fiscal Year 2026 grants to upgrade onsite sewage disposal systems. The project utilizes available technology for nitrogen removal and facilitates sewer connections. The initiative aims to reduce nutrient pollution affecting the Chesapeake Bay and local waterways.

An additional $90,000 was approved through the Program Open Space - Local Share program. These funds are allocated for improvements to the East Wicomico Little League facility. The investment is intended to enhance recreational infrastructure for youth athletics and community use.

The Board also authorized $32,000 under the Rural Legacy Program. This amount covers due diligence expenses for a potential conservation easement acquisition. The acquisition involves approximately 700 acres within the Quantico Creek Rural Legacy Area. The project supports the preservation of agricultural and environmentally sensitive lands.

All items related to Wicomico County were approved without discussion.

"These approvals reflect strong collaboration between Wicomico County and the State of Maryland and represent meaningful investments in our environment, recreational assets, and agricultural heritage," said County Executive Julie Giordano. "Each of these projects supports our long-term commitment to protecting natural resources while improving quality of life for our residents."
