Dorchester County, MD - The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has opened applications for the 2025 First Shot Mentored Deer Hunt program. The initiative targets first-time adult hunters aged 18 and older who lack the necessary skills or knowledge to hunt independently.
The program pairs novice hunters with experienced veteran hunters in Dorchester County. Participants will hunt at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding properties during the designated hunt dates of October 24 and 25, 2025.
Program Requirements and Process
No prior hunting experience is required for participation. Applicants do not need Hunter Education certification or a current hunting license to apply. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources offers an Apprentice Hunting License for those without previous hunting credentials.
Selected participants must obtain a valid Maryland Hunting License or Apprentice License within three days of acceptance notification. The program requires attendance at a mandatory orientation session scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
Selection and Timeline
Program administrators will select participants through a lottery system due to limited space availability. Only selected applicants will receive notification via email by September 8, 2025.
The application deadline is September 2, 2025. Participants must commit to attending both the mandatory orientation and one of the designated hunt dates. The program operates at no cost to selected participants.
Application Process
All submitted applications undergo review for program acceptance. Applicants must complete all questions with detailed and honest responses. Applications remain confidential and serve administrative purposes only.
The program emphasizes that submitting an application does not guarantee enrollment in the mentored hunt program.
