Maryland State Police Aviation Command Collaborates with West Virginia State Police to Apprehend Suspects in Officer-Involved Incident

State of Maryland - Maryland State Police Aviation Command provided crucial aerial support to the West Virginia State Police in a search operation following a crash that injured a West Virginia State Trooper.


The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, July 23, when two suspects fled the scene after reportedly striking a West Virginia State Police patrol vehicle.


At approximately 7 p.m., Maryland State Police Aviation Command's Trooper 3, based in Frederick, Maryland, was requested to assist in locating the suspects.


Upon arrival, officers informed the crew that one suspect had been detained, while another male suspect remained at large. Trooper 3 promptly initiated a comprehensive search utilizing the advanced MX-15 Wescam camera system.


Coordinating with ground units of the West Virginia State Police, Trooper 3's flight crew tracked the suspect through densely wooded areas and across Edsel Avenue.


Their efforts resulted in the second suspect being apprehended without incident, concluding the operation successfully.


The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has been serving citizens since 1970. Operating a fleet of ten helicopters from seven strategically located bases across Maryland, the unit provides 24/7 service, supporting missions including medevac, law enforcement, search and rescue, homeland security, and disaster assessment.


Their operations often rely on the collaborative efforts of local fire departments, rescue teams, EMS, and law enforcement agencies to ensure mission success.
