Maryland State Police Increase Labor Day Weekend Enforcement

STATE OF MD - Maryland State Police have announced enhanced enforcement operations during Labor Day weekend. The initiative aims to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries across the state.


Statewide Patrol Operations


Troopers from all 23 barracks will conduct high-visibility patrols from Friday, August 29 through Sunday, August 31. The operations target impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving behaviors.


The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team will deploy specialized units trained to identify impaired drivers. This team focuses on reducing impaired driving-related injuries and deaths throughout the weekend.


Regional Enforcement Areas


Eastern Region: Troopers from Berlin, Centreville, Easton, Princess Anne, and Salisbury barracks will patrol U.S. Routes 13, 301, 50, 404, and Maryland Route 413.


Central Region: College Park, Forestville, Golden Ring, Rockville, Waterloo, and Westminster barracks will focus on Interstates 495, 70, and Maryland Route 210.


Western Region: Cumberland, Frederick, Hagerstown, and McHenry barracks will monitor U.S. Routes 40, 65, and Interstates 81 and 70.


Northern Region: Bel Air, JFK Memorial Highway, and North East barracks will patrol U.S. Route 40, Maryland Route 272, and areas with higher impaired driving crash rates.


Southern Region: Annapolis, Glen Burnie, La Plata, Leonardtown, and Prince Frederick barracks will cover U.S. Route 50 and Interstates 97 and 695.


Community Outreach Efforts


The enforcement initiative includes partnerships with allied law enforcement agencies and state organizations. Community outreach will be conducted through social media platforms to raise awareness about safe driving practices.


Funding Sources


The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration's Highway Safety Office funds the increased enforcement efforts. The SPIDRE Team operates through a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.


Motorists are urged to plan ahead, designate drivers, and avoid dangerous driving behaviors during the holiday weekend.
