Maryland State Police Investigate Inmate Death at Eastern Correctional Institution
Somerset County, MD - An investigation is underway by the Maryland State Police into the death of an inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County, Maryland.
The deceased inmate has been identified as 31-year-old Quran Middleton. He was serving time at the state prison facility in Westover, Maryland.
Shortly after midnight on March 10, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit. The notification was made regarding an inmate death.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Middleton was discovered unresponsive and lying on the ground in his cell by correctional officers. He was subsequently pronounced deceased by emergency medical service personnel.
Middleton's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the facility. Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division were also present to process the scene for evidence.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the Office of the State's Attorney in Somerset County for review.
