Maryland State Police Investigate Inmate Death in Allegany County

State of MD - Maryland State Police are currently investigating the death of an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County. The investigation was initiated following a report received late on the night of January 10, 2026.

The deceased inmate is identified as Larry Horton, 51. He was serving a sentence at the state prison located in Cumberland, Maryland. Preliminary findings indicate that Horton was discovered unresponsive in his cell by correctional officers.

He was subsequently declared deceased by emergency medical services personnel at the facility.

A suspect, who is also an inmate at the institution, has been identified by authorities. The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending the filing of formal charges.

Investigators are awaiting autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit shortly before 11:30 p.m. on January 10.

Homicide investigators responded to the location, accompanied by crime scene technicians from the Forensic Sciences Division to process the scene for evidence.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Once the inquiry is complete, the findings will be presented to the State's Attorney's Office in Allegany County for review.
