Maryland State Trooper Struck by Suspected DUI Driver
State of Maryland - Maryland State Police arrested a man for suspected impaired driving on Sunday evening. The incident occurred in a work zone in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The suspect is identified as 35-year-old Job David Martinez of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Martinez was charged with suspected driving under the influence. He was transported to the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack for processing.
The involved Maryland State Trooper was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The trooper was treated for injuries and has since been released.
At approximately 9:21 p.m., troopers from the Rockville Barrack responded to southbound I-270 and Watkins Mill Road. A preliminary investigation determined that a Honda passenger vehicle, operated by Martinez, was traveling south on I-270.
The Honda struck the rear of the trooper's marked patrol vehicle. The patrol vehicle had its emergency lights activated at the time. The trooper was inside the vehicle attempting to establish a work zone. Martinez attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle. He was subsequently apprehended by another trooper present in the work zone.
Multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene. These included the Montgomery County Police Department, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration. The right lane of I-270 was closed for more than four hours to facilitate a crash investigation.
This incident marks the third Maryland State Trooper struck by an impaired driver over the weekend. The investigation remains ongoing.
