Talbot County, MD - On May 23, 2025, Mauricio Ibarra Juarez was sentenced to life in prison, with all but 75 years suspended, after pleading guilty to the first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend, Marta Bruno Merino. The Honorable Judge Philip Cronan delivered the sentence.

The tragic murder occurred on December 24, 2021, when Juarez traveled from his home in Virginia to Merino's residence in Trappe, Maryland. He waited for her to return from work and then fatally shot her multiple times in the head.

Law enforcement identified Juarez as the prime suspect using a phone found at the scene. His identity was confirmed through DNA analysis. Forensic examinations of the device revealed that Juarez had downloaded Merino's work and home addresses before the incident, even though he had turned off the phone's GPS location services.

Further investigations using cell phone tower data verified Juarez's route from Virginia to Kent Island, which was Merino's location of employment. He surveilled Merino's workplace before going to her home, where he carried out the premeditated attack.

After committing the heinous crime, Juarez fled to Mexico, but was brought back to Talbot County in 2024 after being located with assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice.

This case was prosecuted by Talbot County State's Deputy State's Attorney Joyce E. Jones, with contribution from Paralegal Leigh Adams. Talbot County State's Attorney Joseph I. Coale thanked the members of the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, including but not limited to Kyle Clark, Lance Lloyd, and Frank Lopez; members of the Talbot County Sheriff's Office, including but not limited to Steve Hall and Justin Aita.

Mr. Coale stated 'I am confident that Mr. Juarez will spend the rest of his life in prison for this heinous crime.'
