Queen Anne's County, MD - A serious traffic collision involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer occurred on the westbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge shortly after 11:40 a.m. today, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the passenger vehicle was traveling in the eastbound lane when, for reasons yet to be determined, it swerved into the westbound lanes and collided with the tractor-trailer.

At the time of the incident, the westbound span was operating under two-way traffic conditions.

The driver of the passenger vehicle sustained serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed in the crash.

Following the crash, all westbound lanes were closed to traffic. At approximately 12:50 p.m., one lane reopened to alleviate congestion, and by 2:20 p.m., all lanes were fully operational.

The MDTA Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash to determine the underlying cause.

Authorities urge anyone who witnessed the incident to contact MDTA Police at 410-295-8146.
