Modernization of US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station in Wicomico County Initiated by State Highway Administration
WICOMICO COUNTY, MD- The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has commenced a $5.2 million project to upgrade and modernize the US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station in Delmar, Wicomico County.
Construction activities at the facility, situated on US 13 between Mallard Drive and Winner Boulevard, are projected to begin this month. Completion is anticipated by next summer, contingent upon weather conditions.
The modernization plan does not include the expansion of the weigh station property footprint.
All designated improvements are engineered to remain within the existing right-of-way.
Facility upgrades will encompass the installation of new truck height detectors and an LED signal display. Additionally, the existing scale will be replaced with a modern deep pit scale and computer system.
Further improvements to the facility include:
- Additional parking capacity for inspections.
- Upgraded traffic barriers, lighting systems, and closed-circuit cameras.
- Improved signage.
- Installation of safety eyewash stations.
- Refurbishment of entrance gates.
- Replacement of existing office trailers with new modular buildings for inspections on both northbound and southbound sides.
Harkins Contracting Inc., based in Salisbury, has been identified as the primary contractor for the construction. The US 13 Truck Weigh and Inspection Station is recorded as one of two remaining scale houses constructed in 1955 and has been under the operation of the Maryland State Police since 1967.
The State Highway Administration maintains efforts to ensure safe traffic mobility within work zones.
Motorists are advised to remain alert, focus on driving, and observe reduced speed limits and other traffic pattern modifications.
