Ocean City Appoints Josh Bunting as New Fire Chief
Ocean City, MD - The Ocean City Fire Department officially swore in Josh Bunting as Fire Chief on February 3, 2026. This appointment follows a recommendation by City Manager Terry McGean and subsequent approval by the Mayor and City Council.
Bunting brings extensive command experience to the role, having served as both an Ocean City volunteer firefighter and the Ocean City Fire Marshal.
City Manager McGean expressed strong support for the decision. "I was honored to recommend Josh Bunting for the position of Ocean City Fire Chief," McGean stated. "His command experience as both an Ocean City volunteer firefighter and the Ocean City Fire Marshal makes him uniquely qualified for the position. Chief Bunting's entire career has been dedicated to the health and safety of our residents, visitors, and our volunteer and professional firefighters and EMTs. I look forward to working with him to continue the Ocean City Fire Department's tradition of high standards and professionalism."
Bunting assumes leadership during a period of evolution for the department. The organization is currently adapting to the needs of a growing year-round population and millions of annual visitors. Recent changes include expanded EMS services and strategic planning shaped by staffing studies and retirements.
Under Bunting's direction, the department aims to focus on operational readiness, the wellness of firefighters and paramedics, and the recruitment and retention of staff.
Chief Bunting expressed enthusiasm for his new role and the team he leads. "I'm incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to serve as Fire Chief," said Bunting. "This department's strength has always been its people. I look forward to working alongside our talented career and volunteer members to support one another, serve our community, and continue moving the department forward together."
Mayor Rick Meehan also welcomed the appointment, highlighting Bunting's local knowledge. "Josh understands Ocean City, our residents, and the unique public safety needs of a coastal community," Meehan said. "His experience and collaborative leadership style will help ensure the Fire Department continues its strong tradition of service while preparing for the future."
The Ocean City Fire Department currently manages thousands of calls annually, covering fire suppression, EMS, and rescue operations across the town.
