Ocean Pines, MD - The Worcester County Public Works Water and Wastewater (WWW) Division has scheduled a comprehensive smoke testing operation on the sanitary sewer system. The tests are expected to run from March 21 - 26, 2024, in various locations within Ocean Pines, including Carrolton Lane, Mumfords Landing Road, Fishing Creek Lane, and more.

The activities will necessitate opening and accessing manholes in the streets and public utility easements. The goal is to identify and repair any breaks or defects in the sewer system.

Additionally, this process will reveal any instances where storm or surface water is infiltrating the sewer system.

The testing will utilize a specialized, non-toxic smoke that poses no risks to plant or animal life. It will not leave any residuals or stains, and while it is visible and has a distinctive odor, this should dissipate in a few minutes with adequate ventilation.

Home and business owners should be aware that smoke may enter their premises under certain circumstances. This may happen if there are inadequately installed or defective sewer pipe vents, faulty or missing traps under sinks and other drains, or damaged pipes and seals within the wastewater drainage system.

Significantly, smoke testing can unmask the presence of potentially harmful sewer gas within the system. If smoke does enter your home or business during the testing process, it's advised to contact a member of the testing crew or contact WWW directly at 410-641-5251. Their lines are open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The WWW Division takes this opportunity to assure residents that this testing procedure is an essential step in maintaining the integrity of the local sewer system and ensuring the safety and health of the community.
