State of Virginia - In a tragic incident that occurred on Friday evening, February 16, 2024, an explosion at a residence in the 300 block of Silver Ridge Drive in Sterling, Virginia, resulted in the death of a firefighter and various injuries among other crew members and civilians.

The Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center first received a 911 call around 7:38 p.m., reporting a suspicious odor of gas in the area. Upon investigation, teams from Sterling discovered a 500-gallon propane tank with a leak outside the residence. This prompted the call for backup from the Loudoun County's Hazardous Materials Response Team, accompanied by additional teams from Sterling, South Riding, and other command and safety officers.

Shortly after crew members arrived on the scene, a catastrophic explosion unraveled, trapping several firefighters within the wreckage of the residence. This alarming incident led to the activation of a Rapid Intervention Task Force and an urgent request for a second alarm, mobilizing additional teams from Fairfax County and the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority.

Following the explosion, teams worked tirelessly to locate and rescue those trapped under the debris. Despite their best efforts, one firefighter was declared deceased at the site, while 10 others were transported to local hospitals for immediate medical attention due to injuries sustained during the explosion. Two civilians were also taken to local hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal's Office is currently investigating the site to trace the origin and cause of the explosion. Preliminary insights suggest that this was an isolated incident and assure no further threat to the local community. Further details regarding the investigation and the sadly deceased firefighter will be shared as appropriate.
