Salisbury, MD - Wicomico County Health Department welcomes all to our 7th Overdose Awareness Day event on Thursday, August 31st, 2023, at Winterplace Park (6737 Blue Ribbon Road, Salisbury, MD 21804) from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Each year families, friends, survivors, and the community come together for support and to build our efforts to help those at risk. Overdose Awareness Day offers all who have been affected by overdose a chance to publicly mourn and help the wider community understand that fatal overdose profoundly affects our society.A Time to Remember. A Time to Act. Let's shed awareness, remember those who have lost their battle, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind. Organized on the understanding that no one needs to feel shame or disgrace over a drug overdose, this FREE family-friendly evening includes stories of those working on recovery and those who have struggled with a loved one in their battle, as well as resources, food, and snow cones. The event concludes with a candlelight vigil. #endoverdose. #weseeyou. With the number of fatalities from Fentanyl- and Xylazine-laced street drugs, August 31st is also a chance to receive local resources to help with addiction and education about medication misuse. Prescribed pain medications may also not be as innocent as they seem; they play an important medical role but taking them other than prescribed can have tragic long-term consequences. Participation in International Overdose Awareness Day is free, and everyone is welcome. Our mission is to shed strength and hope, be proactive in drawing our community closer and eliminate stigma. For additional information about our Overdose Awareness Day event at Winterplace Park, call Jessica Taylor @ 443-695-0548.
