Proactive Enforcement Operation Conducted in Elm Street and Pine Street Area
Dorchester County, MD - On March 19, 2026, from approximately 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., members of the Cambridge Police Department Special Tactical Response Team, Criminal Investigation Division, Patrol Division, K9 Unit, and Drone Unit conducted a proactive enforcement operation in the Elm Street and Pine Street area. The operation was conducted in response to ongoing complaints of trespassing and controlled dangerous substance (CDS) activity.
Incident 1: Vehicle Pursuit and Arrest of Wayne Cornish Jr.
During the operation, the Cambridge Police Department Drone Unit observed a vehicle in the Elm Street area and maintained surveillance as it left the location. The Drone Unit relayed the vehicle's movements and observed traffic violations, including failure to stop at stop signs at High Street and Washington Street, and at Washington Street and Rigby Avenue.
Cambridge Police Department Patrol units conducted a traffic stop on Greenwood Avenue near Washington Street. Officers made contact with the sole occupant, identified as Wayne Cornish Jr., 33, of Cambridge, Maryland.
During the stop, a Cambridge Police Department K9 Unit was requested. Cornish refused commands to exit the vehicle. Due to concern that he may flee, officers placed a tire deflation device, identified as a Stop Stick Terminator, under a rear tire of the vehicle.
Cornish then fled from the traffic stop, and Cambridge Police Department units initiated a pursuit. The tire deflation device successfully deflated the rear tire. The Cambridge Police Department Drone Unit continued to monitor the pursuit and provided direction of travel to responding officers.
The pursuit continued from Greenwood Avenue to Camelia Street, then to Rigby Avenue and Wood Street. The vehicle was operated recklessly during the pursuit, including running stop signs, leaving the roadway on Hubert Street, and traveling the wrong direction on Park Lane.
Cambridge Police Department units deployed a Star Chase tracking device on the vehicle on Park Lane.
The vehicle then turned onto Clinton Street, where the driver lost control and spun out due to the deflated tire. Officers removed the driver from the vehicle without incident.
A Cambridge Police Department K9 Unit conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle for the presence of CDS, which resulted in a positive alert. During a search of the vehicle, officers located a loaded Ruger handgun under the driver's seat and a digital scale containing suspected cocaine residue.
Cornish was arrested and transported to Cambridge Police Department for processing. He was determined to be prohibited from possessing a firearm. He was later transferred to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections and held without bond.
