Queen Anne's County, MD - On April 26, 2025, a Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Deputy was struck during a routine traffic stop by a driver suspected of being impaired. Deputy First Class Schulz was conducting the traffic stop on eastbound Route 50, near Romancoke Road in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, when a vehicle, traveling at a high-rate of speed collided with his patrol car from behind.

This impact caused Schulz's vehicle to crash into the car that had originally been stopped.

Emergency services responded promptly, and the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office took over the investigation of the crash. Deputy Schulz was assessed and treated for minor injuries at a nearby medical facility.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Schulz was identified as Christopher Teta, 35, of Stevensville, Maryland. Deputies detected a strong odor of alcohol on Teta's breath and observed several signs of impairment.

Although Teta agreed to Field Sobriety Tests, he was unable to perform them satisfactorily and was subsequently arrested for driving while impaired. Teta refused to take a breathalyzer test following his arrest.

Sheriff Gary Hofmann commented on the incident, highlighting the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of adhering to Maryland's Move Over law. He stated, "This serves as a stark reminder that impaired driving endangers everyone on the road, including law enforcement officers who are simply doing their jobs. This could have easily ended in unimaginable tragedy. Maryland's Move Over law exists to protect those who serve, and it must be taken seriously. Our deputies put themselves in harm's way every day, but incidents like this are preventable when drivers make responsible choices."

Teta now faces multiple charges, including DUI, DWI, and negligent and reckless driving, among others. This incident underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and responsibility on the roads.
