QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE MAKES ARREST FOLLOWING K-9 ALERT ON TRAFFIC STOP

Queen Anne's County, MD - An incident that occurred on April 22, 2025, underscored the crucial role traffic enforcement plays in enhancing public safety.
Around 6:34 PM, DFC Brown, was on duty near Westbound Route 50 and VFW Avenue. During his routine patrols for traffic violations, he observed a vehicle that was not staying within a single lane and driving recklessly.
Recognizing the potential danger, DFC Brown promptly initiated a traffic stop.
Upon interacting with the driver, identified as April Guffey, DFC Brown noticed several indicators that raised concerns, prompting him to call for a K-9 unit to perform a scan of the vehicle. The K-9 scan resulted in a positive alert for the presence of illegal substances.
In light of this evidence, April Guffey admitted that there were illegal controlled dangerous substances (CDS) in her vehicle. This admission allowed officers to conduct a probable cause search, which uncovered 25 wax fold bags containing a substance believed to be the potent opioid fentanyl, along with various other CDS and paraphernalia.
Guffey was placed under arrest for the following:
- CDS Possession w/ Intent to Distribute
- CDS Possession - Not Cannabis
- CDS Possession Paraphernalia x 3
- Reckless Driving
- Negligent Driving
- Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device
- Unsafe Lane Change
Guffey was initially held on a $5,000 bond however following her bond review, she posted the bail and was released pending her court date.
