Worcester County, MD - A confirmed rabid skunk has been identified off Route 50 near Tall Timber Road in Berlin, Maryland. It is advised that additional rabid animals may be present in the surrounding area.

Consequently, public safety protocols have been established by the Worcester County Health Department to protect the community.

Immediate notification is required if direct contact occurs between individuals or pets and the rabid skunk. Contact is formally defined as bites, scratches, or any other direct physical exposure.

In such events, the Worcester County Health Department's Office of Environmental Health must be contacted immediately at 410-352-3234. Furthermore, pets must not be handled by their owners if physical contact with a wild animal has taken place.

Any animals observed exhibiting signs of illness or unusual behavior must be reported immediately to Animal Control or a local law enforcement agency. Direct contact between these animals and humans or pets must be strictly prevented. Children must be instructed to maintain a safe distance from wild or unfamiliar animals.

To maintain property security, pets must not be permitted to roam freely. Pet food must not be left outdoors, as these practices are known to attract wild and stray animals to residential properties.

Under Maryland and Worcester County law, current rabies vaccinations are mandatory for all dogs, cats, and ferrets over four months of age. It is strictly advised that vaccination statuses be continuously monitored and updated for all pets. This requirement is particularly important for animals spending time outdoors.
