Crisfield, MD - A rabid raccoon was recently discovered in Crisfield, in the 26000 block of Asbury Road. The infected raccoon had fought with a dog and was brought to the MD State Laboratory for testing on Friday, April 12, 2024. The positive test results were returned on Monday, April 15, 2024.

Rabies is a dangerous virus with a 100% fatality rate in mammals, including humans, if untreated. To prevent exposure to the deadly virus, the Somerset County Health Department offers several precautions:

  • Report any wildlife behaving oddly or looking unwell.

  • Ensure pets and livestock are vaccinated against rabies as prescribed by Maryland law. Vaccinations protect pets and create a barrier between humans and wild animals, preventing the virus's spread.

  • Avoid feeding wildlife or stray animals and discourage them from seeking food near your residence.

  • Keep a distance from unknown domestic or wild animals, especially if they're showing unusual behavior.

  • Secure garbage cans and avoid outside food storage.

  • Teach children to inform an adult if they've been scratched or bitten by an animal.

Additionally, unvaccinated pets exposed to potentially rabid animals must be quarantined for four months. Vaccinated pets must receive a booster rabies vaccination within five days of contact. Report all animal bites or scratches to the Somerset County Health Department at 443-523-1700 during business hours and 443-859-4419 after hours.

Remember, your actions are crucial in protecting your family and pets against the fatal rabies virus. More information can be found at somersethealth.org.
