The Fruitland Volunteer Fire Company responded to the single-alarm fire with 24 firefighters. Personnel brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes of arrival.
The fire originated in an exterior utility closet attached to the one-story masonry building. Investigators determined the cause was accidental, resulting from careless smoking in the area.
Restaurant occupants discovered the fire and reported it to authorities. The building sustained an estimated $50,000 in structural damage.
Both smoke alarms and fire suppression systems were present in the building but did not activate due to the fire's location in the exterior utility area.
