SALISBURY FIREFIGHTERS NEAR COMPLETION OF ROPE RESCUE CERTIFICATION

Salisbury, Maryland - Firefighters from the Salisbury Fire Department are in the final stages of achieving their Rope Rescue Technician certification. The last set of practice evolutions was recently conducted at Station 16 in partnership with the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, marking a significant milestone in their specialized training.
The rigorous certification program consists of 90 hours of training designed to prepare participants to safely and effectively handle rope rescue operations. During the most recent session, firefighters practiced litter raises and lowers with an attendant.
Teams stationed atop the training tower constructed the necessary rope systems to maneuver a simulated load safely inside the litter basket. The litter attendant's role was critical, ensuring proper alignment of the litter and navigating obstacles such as edges and windows encountered during the exercise.
To gain comprehensive experience, participants rotated through each role, including commanding an evolution, operating a rope system, and serving as the litter attendant. The training allows each firefighter to become proficient in the various components of these intricate rescue operations.
The certification course is set to conclude on July 2. Upon completion, newly certified firefighters will have the opportunity to join the department's elite Special Operations Team. This highly skilled unit consists of approximately 20 members who specialize in technical rescue disciplines, including rope, trench, and confined space rescue.
The Salisbury Fire Department offers specialized training like this regularly, not only to its members but also to personnel from neighboring fire departments. To maintain peak readiness, firefighters complete two hours of training during every shift and often pursue additional training on their days off.
The department is actively accepting applications for both career and volunteer positions. While applications can be submitted year-round, the testing process for career firefighters is typically held every four months, depending on applicant volume.
Interested candidates can apply through the City of Salisbury's official website. Volunteer applications are also welcome in-person at Station 16, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or online through the Fire Department's webpage.
