SALISBURY, MD - The City of Salisbury has announced the activation of a new red-light safety camera program at designated intersections throughout the community. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to mitigate the risks associated with red-light violations and to reduce the frequency of resulting collisions.

Data from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration indicates that red-light running contributes to approximately 92,000 motor vehicle crashes annually, with nearly 950 resulting in fatalities. The implementation of this program is a proactive measure to address this public safety concern.

The automated enforcement system will be operational at intersections identified through analysis of crash data and traffic volume studies. The system is designed to automatically detect and capture photographic evidence of vehicles that enter an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red, in violation of Maryland law.

Red-light safety cameras have been installed at the following intersections:

  • Northbound N. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13) at N. Pointe Dr
  • Westbound N. Pointe Dr at N. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13)
  • Southbound N. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13) at Centre Rd
  • Northbound S. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13) at W. College Ave
  • Southbound S. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13) at W. College Ave
  • Westbound W. College Ave at S. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13)
  • Northbound W. Isabella St at W. Salisbury Pkwy (Rt. 50)
  • Southbound Nanticoke Rd at W. Salisbury Pkwy (Rt. 50)
  • Westbound W. Salisbury Pkwy (Rt. 50) at Mill St

Additional intersections may be considered for inclusion pending further evaluation and approval from the Maryland State Highway Administration.

A 30-day warning period will commence on December 5, 2025. During this period, warning notices will be mailed to the registered owners of vehicles photographed committing a violation. No fines will be assessed during the warning period.

Effective January 5, 2026, citations carrying a fine of $75 will be issued for violations. Revenue generated from the program will be allocated to public safety initiatives, including but not limited to intersection improvements and driver education programs.

"The primary objective of this program is the safety of our community," stated Chief Meienschein of the Salisbury Police Department. "Red-light violations are a significant cause of preventable collisions. These safety cameras serve as a deterrent to dangerous driving behaviors and are a critical tool in our efforts to reduce crashes and improve safety for all roadway users."

The program's warning phase begins on December 5, 2025, and concludes on January 4, 2026. The issuance of official Notices of Violation will commence on January 5, 2026. Further information is available on the City of Salisbury website.
