Salisbury, MD - A Salisbury Police Officer was observed providing assistance to members of the local unsheltered population earlier today and we felt it should be shared with everyone!

The interaction occurred at a bus stop located on Calvert Street. Christine Chestnut, the City of Salisbury's Housing and Homeless Manager, witnessed the event while dropping off a resident of Anne Street Village at the bus stop.

Officer Sigmund exited her vehicle to check on the individuals waiting at the bus stop. She inquired about their well-being and provided hand warmers. When asked why they remained outside in low temperatures, the individuals explained that the Help and Outreach Point of Entry was closed.

They further noted that they were unable to return to their designated shelter until 4:30 p.m. Officer Sigmund suggested they utilize the public library to seek shelter indoors.

Officer Sigmund indicated that she maintains a positive rapport with the group. She noted that she has "never had a minute's trouble out of any of 'the guys'."

Regarding the welfare check, Officer Sigmund stated, "they are human, and it's cold!" The interaction remained positive, with the group engaging in lighthearted conversation with the officer regarding the weather conditions.

In today's society with media outlets only showing the negative that comes along with law enforcement, we felt it was only appropriate to show a different side of these heroes. A side that shows their heart and compassion, regardless of one's housing or financial status in the community!

Thank you Officer Sigmund for your kindness and humanity, and also thank you to Mrs. Chestnut for sharing this information.
