Wicomico County, MD - A Salisbury resident has been arrested in connection with an alleged arson incident stemming from a dispute over $7, according to investigators.
On July 3, authorities from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Salisbury Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the 300 block of Penn Street in Salisbury, Maryland. The incident occurred after the occupant of the home extinguished flames that had been deliberately set at the front door.
The homeowner informed investigators that Janice Louise Oney, an acquaintance, became upset during an argument over $7 that she claimed was owed to her.
Following the dispute, Oney reportedly left the scene, returning shortly after with a container of gasoline, which she used to ignite the fire. She subsequently fled the area on a bicycle.
Aided by K9 "Deacon," investigators confirmed the fire had been intentionally ignited. Additional evidence, including surveillance footage from nearby businesses, substantiated the allegations and connected Oney to the crime.
On August 1, an arrest warrant was issued for Oney, charging her with first- and second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property valued over $1,000, reckless endangerment, and theft under $100.
The same evening, the Salisbury Police Department, in coordination with the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack, located and detained her.
Oney was transported to the Wicomico County Detention Center, where she remains held without bond following her initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner.
